October 2, 2025 – Cardboard Sessions and Ernest Packaging return with a new session and a new milestone for Episode 29 featuring Dweezil Zappa and the first Cardboard Session to be mastered with Dolby Atmos. Recorded in Los Angeles at Zappa’s own Hikari Studios, the session was then mastered by Zappa in Dolby Atmos, an immersive audio format that creates a realistic 3D experience for listeners. “It’s as if your head is right at the source and you’re hearing all around, affecting you on a sensory level you wouldn’t get otherwise” states Zappa.WATCH CARDBOARD SESSION FT. A master at pushing the boundaries of music while preserving its artistry, Zappa’s enthusiasm for playing the cardboard instruments was incredible. His encouragement to take the concept seriously was truly inspiring and embodies everything the series stands for. The song, “Man Your Stations” which Zappa and his band recorded, was written specifically for Cardboard Sessions with use of the cardboard instruments.

“The thing that’s fun about it” states Zappa “is that the piece of music was constructed in a way to purposely have people moving in the room past microphones and changing positions and that’s why I ended up calling it “Man Your Stations”. We were able to have instruments that were already in the room, because we were getting ready to go on tour, and we didn’t want to break down our rehearsal setup, so we wanted to use everything that was in the room and it was a ton of instruments all over the place, plus the cardboard instruments and then it was “Ok, go over there!” without having to say anything, we incorporated it into the whole song. A couple of people moved to different places to end up on drums, one guy started on guitar, and another started on keyboard, but they went to different drum sets. Everything is around that feature set. The cardboard instruments were our focus, but we have these satellite elements that were incorporated.”Cardboard Sessions is a free-form video series that brings musicians together to play instruments built and designed by the creators of Cardboard Chaos and Ernest Packaging where progressive concept ideas in sports and music are crafted from cardboard and include cardboard Vans sneakers, a cardboard surfboard, a cardboard skateboard and more. A creative exploration of the love of music and the chance to hear something original with no rehearsal, no plan, and no rules. Artists who have had the opportunity to play the cardboard creations in past sessions include ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, J Mascis, Matt Sorum, Terry Reid, Daru Jones, Marcus King, Robby Krieger, Preservation Hall All-Star Band, LP, Pete Yorn, Meg Myers, Dogstar, and more.
