One fateful day in Boston, some years ago, two immortals crossed paths in a bookstore. He, Jack Kosto, was of many, many notes, and she, Adrienne Cowan, was of darkness and the old world. Such was the birth of Seven Spires, and so it shall always be. With the fortunate additions of old friends Chris Dovas and Peter de Reyna, the family was complete. Though young in countenance, the four were armed with highly specialized training from Berklee College of Music, as well as an insatiable drive to earn that which they hungered for.
After cutting their teeth in their early years sharing bills with the likes of Arch Enemy, Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Epica, The Agonist, Butcher Babies, Amaranthe, Kreator, Huntress, Carach Angren, and others, they ventured to Gate Studios in Wolfsburg, Germany to finish recording their new album, “Solveig”, with the illustrious Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Angra, Kamelot, Epica, After Forever).
Following a highly successful crowdfunded release of “Solveig”, these metal storytellers voyaged across the Atlantic for a headlining set at MetalDays ’17. Upon returning stateside, they were then called to ProgPower USA ’17 to fill in for Teramaze, sharing the stage with Dynazty, Snowy Shaw, Pain, Amaranthe, and Katatonia.
Jack Kosto is a modern metal guitarist, mixing and mastering engineer, and songwriter, best known for his work with Symphonic Metal band Seven Spires. Specializing in dark, theatrical metal riffing and soloing, Jack is a perfectionist when it comes to both technicality and musicality. He is also an avid lover of audio production in modern rock and metal and is passionate about creating massive, energetic, and polished recordings, from source tones to final masters.
Jack began his musical career after learning classical viola in early elementary and middle school, and he was performing with a high school youth orchestra while only in the 6th grade. After seeing a clinic by shred guitar master Michael Angelo Batio in his hometown, Jack picked up the electric guitar, which became his first true love and primary focus. In addition to Batio’s mentorship and influence, Jack is heavily inspired by his longtime Berklee Guitar teacher Joe Stump, as well as Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy, Nevermore), Steve Vai, Michael Amott (Arch Enemy), and Joe Satriani. Jack also draws influence from more modern bands and guitarists like Kamelot, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Nightwish, Insomium, and Ola Englund (Feared, the Haunted). Jack’s production idols include Jens Bogren, Andy Sneap, and Chris Lord-Alge.
Jack was accepted and began his studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music at the young age of 15, and graduated with a degree in Performance in the spring of 2016. At Berklee, he studied Jazz and Classical harmony and concepts, and he brings those to the table when writing for his main project, Seven Spires (sevenspiresband.com), which he co-founded with Vocalist and main songwriter, Adrienne Cowan. Seven Spires released their debut album, “Solveig”, on August 4th, 2017.
Quotes:
“Fierce riffage combined with some blazing single-note action- Jack Kosto’s playing on the new Seven Spires record is really quite good. Also, when considering the fact that Jack’s still a young player with years of development ahead of him, it`s even more impressive. In time I can see Jack evolving into one monster of a metal player.” – Joe Stump
“While one could wax poetic about the entire band’s efforts here, a little spotlight should go towards vocalist Adrienne Cowan and guitarist Jack Kosto. Both seem to play well beyond their years, and their dynamic is cultivating something special here. Kosto’s flashy yet tasteful lead work throughout with varied riffing approaches bodes well for even greater things to come… Solveig is an album made by musicians who want to change the game. Not confined by mere genre conventions and tropes, Seven Spires goes the distance to create a theatrical album that flows between beauty and extremity, and all points between. The sky is the limit as they continue onwards”- Kyle McGinn, Deadrhetoric.com
“Jack Kosto has the intricate, arpeggio free-flowing skills down pat – consistently unleashing fiery licks and tapping tricks at his disposal, but maintaining proper restraint and song advancement at the heart of his riff choices and transitions, most evident on the blackened speed twists for the conclusion of “Closure”. – Matt Coe, Deadrhetoric.com
Seven Spires’ new album is “SOLVEIG”, a theatrical metal concept album in two acts. It is the story of a lost soul and his journey through a Demon’s sunless neo-Victorian underworld. Despite small glimmers of hope, it is a grim tale with a heavy focus on escapism, death, and decadence. With distinct
attention to melancholic power metal, melodic death, and black metal, Seven Spires fuse sounds
from across the spectrum of metal with their great love for Romantic composers, and the atmospheric
and storytelling capabilities of film scores.
